Children's Programs


Southern Vermont Natural History Museum: VERMONT RAPTORS


Monday, June 19 at 3 pm. Meet the birds of prey! Three to four live hawks, owls and falcons will come for a face-to-face exploration of what it takes to be a raptor. Ages 5 and up. Takes place at the Meeting House. Register

Wednesday Booktivity: Fairy & Elf Houses


Wednesday, June 21 at 3 pm. Every Wednesday at 3pm we offer a hands-on activity based on the Summer Reading theme. This time, if you build them a house, they will come. Using only natural objects, build inviting dwellings for our friends from other realms. Supplies will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your special (all-natural) items from home. Register

LCATV Child Producers Workshop


Children ages 7-11 will have fun learning the equipment used to make television programming, and will complete a short library-themed project. This month is “PSA: My Favorite Thing about the Library.”

Keva Building Challenge


Keva building challenges are once a month. Can you build the tallest tower or the strongest bridge out of these small wooden planks? Join us to find out! For builders ages 4 and up.

Hula Hooping & Juggling with Michelle


Friday, July 7 at 2 pm. Using a variety of hula hoops and juggling balls, bean bags and some juggling pins, participants learn hooping and juggling. For ages 3 and up. Register

'Hoopoe Show'


Tuesday, July 11 at 2 pm. Chris Hoopoe Yerlig 'Hoopoe' blends silent pantomime comedy, movement illusions, sleight of hand magic tricks and balloon wizardry, to create an original vaudeville show that is funny, imaginative and full of surprises. The audience is involved throughout. For all ages. Register

Wed. Booktivity: Cardboard City


Wednesday, July 12 at 3 pm. Every Wednesday at 3 pm we offer a hands-on activity based on the Summer Reading theme. Using only cardboard, tape, scissors, and little else, teams will design & create the buildings that make up a town. Register

Summer Encore Theatre Presents: Mirror, Mirror, Show Me The Fairest World of All


Monday, July 17 at 3 pm. Summer Encore will develop a story that includes villains from folk and fairy tales around the world who have a change of heart and start a crusade to unite the world in peace. Register

Wednesday, July 19 at 6:30 pm. The whole family can come in PJs to hear bedtime stories and enjoy cookies and milk. No sign-up required.

Rebecca Rupp presents Fantastic Physics


Friday, July 21 at 2 pm. Who invented the rocket? The parachute? The battery? What about the windmill? We’ll find out and then do some cool experiments with balloons and electricity, build a catapult, and fire a rocket. Register

Family Build & Ice-Cream Social


Friday, July 28 at 2 pm. You are invited to eat ice-cream and build using donated items. All items will then be brought to the Colchester Food Shelf. Your admission fee is a food item for building & donating! Register

The Luneaus Basketball Family


Monday, July 31 at 3 pm. Ilze Luneau dribbles, juggles and spins basketballs on a balance board, and she uses other props for music and dance. Be prepared to join in for a spin! Register

VINS presents Raptors and Their Homes

Movie Night: Ruby Bridges - CANCELLED


Friday, Aug. 4 at 6pm (movie at 6:30pm). Disney presents the inspiring true story of one little girl whose strength and dignity during the racially charged 1960s helped change history! The movie will be preceded by a discussion about the connection between books like Brown Girl Dreaming and the story of young Ruby Bridges. Attendees are invited to read a favorite poem from the book aloud.

Rockin’ Ron the Friendly Pirate

First Time Kindergarteners

Medieval Games


Tuesday, Aug. 15 from 3-5 pm. The Big Blue Trunk is back to whisk you away to a land of knights, princesses, and dragons. Court Jester Mike will bring his castle playhouses and themed costumes and lead children in a variety of medieval games and activities. Register

Writing Workshop & Book Discussion with Geof Hewitt


Wednesday, Aug. 16 from 4:30-5:30 pm. Join Vermont poet, teacher, and performer, Geof Hewitt and our Young Writers’ Group for a writing workshop. Writing and reading will be followed by pizza and a 6pm book discussion of Brown Girl Dreaming, this year’s VT Reads book.

Nation Teen Lock-In


Friday, July 28 from 6 pm to 12 am. We’re doing it again! Party all night long at the library as we BUILD IT with teens across the country! You may not have known this totally obscure and incredibly useful holiday existed, but it’s definitely a library holiday. We’ll skype with authors! Play games! Eat food! Watch YouTube! This I Believe II Discussion


Thursday, Aug. 3 at 4 pm. Entering a humanities course this fall and stumped on your summer work assignment? Come discuss the essays in This I Believe II with your peers! There will be snacks. Please note, although this discussion is open to all teens entering grades 11 and 12, it is designed specifically to assist with the Colchester High School summer work assignment for this year. Workshop: Memoir Poetry


Monday, Aug. 14 at 5:30 pm. Brown Girl Dreaming has some beautiful poems about writing, and many poignant passages about Woodson’s life. We’ll revisit these passages and learn some of the tricks of the trade of memoir. Write and workshop your own poem inspired by Jacqueline Woodson’s beautiful book. Teens grades 6 & older. Register

Summer Sketching Outdoors
