The animals around us experience many of the same diseases as human beings, from breast cancer to heart disease, from arthritis to obesity. What can we learn from these shared medical problems? In addition, many emerging infectious diseases, such as Lyme disease and Ebola, originate in animal species and spread to humans, often because of human impacts on natural ecosystems. We will discuss the parallels and intersections between the health of our animals and human health. Dr. Ruth Blauwiekel is a resident of Colchester and works as the University Veterinarian at UVM. She is a member of the One Health Committee of the Vermont Veterinary Medical Association.

You can drop off your entry starting Dec. 1; voting starts Dec. 7, but entries are accepted even after voting begins. Build a tasty structure, and bring it to the library for our annual contest. We’ll display your creations, and every entrant will be eligible for a raffled basket of goodies. Patrons will also get to vote on their favorites. The Green Mountain Book Award is Vermont’s state book award for high school students. Each month, we’ll read and review one of the 15 nominees as a potential winner for the year! Teens grades 9-12. Teens in grades 6-8 are welcome to come with parent permission. The GMBA list is intended for high school students and younger teens may have more interest in the Dorothy Canfield Fisher Award book club, which meets the first Wednesday of the month. Santa has once again agreed to stop in Colchester on his way up to the North Pole to get ready for the holiday season. This year however Santa is going to read the children a bedtime story! Join all the elves in the Colchester Parks & Recreation Department and Colchester Lions Club as they cook you a delicious ‘breakfast’ dinner. Then Santa will be waiting to read you his favorite holiday story. Wear your PJ’s if you want! Dinner will be breakfast! Come for pancakes, eggs, and sausage.
