Update - We are now accepting entries till Friday, Dec. 6. Build a tasty gingerbread structure, and bring it to the library for our annual contest. We'll display your creations, and every entrant will be eligible for a raffled basket of goodies. Gingerbread kits are welcome, and family entries are very much encouraged. Here is the link to our entry form.
Book Drive for Holiday Baskets - Extended
Update - The Book Drive has been extended until Thursday, Dec. 12. The Burnham Memorial Library's Young Adult Advisory Board works in cooperation with Colchester-Milton Rotary on their annual Holiday Basket project. While Rotarians collect food and other essentials for approximately 250 local families, the YA Board collects books for the children and teens in each family. Our goal is to make certain that every child and teen on the list gets to feed their minds with something good to read. If you would like to participate, please donate a new or like-new book for kids or teens. Drop boxes are also available at Malletts Bay School, Colchester Middle School, and Colchester High School.
Cider and Cookies
The week of Dec. 2-6, stop in for homemade cookies and spicy cider, compliments of library staff.
Family Movie Night
On Friday, Dec. 13, at 6:30 pm, we are having another Family Movie Night. Call us at 264-5660 for information about the film, and please register online here.
Collecting Toiletries for Teens
A group of local 6th and 7th grade girl scouts are collecting toiletry items for the homeless teens served by Community Health Centers. There is a drop-off box located near the entrance of the library. They are looking for a wide range of items (shampoo, soap, deodorant, lotion, etc), ideally in travel/trial size. The collection is running until the first week of December.

Self Defense Class with Colchester Police
The Library is working in concert with the Colchester Police Department to put on a Rape Aggression Defense class for women. The RAD program is a comprehensive, women-only course that focuses on awareness, prevention, risk reduction, and then progresses on to the basics of hands-on defense. The course is taught by nationally certified RAD instructors and provides each student with a workbook. The six-week course takes place on Thursdays at 6-8 pm, from January 9 till February 13, 2014. It will take place at the Colchester Meeting House, next door to the library. The class is free, and is open to women 13 years of age and up. To sign up, please contact Corporal Jaime L. Bressler at 264-5555, or by e-mail at email@example.com
New Phone Number
Our new phone system has been installed! We now share the same system as the rest of town government, and have significantly more flexibility than before. The new number is (802) 264-5660, whether you're calling the adult or children's departments. When you call, the system will prompt you to choose 1) for our hours, 2) for a staff directory, 3) for the circulation desks and a departmental directory, or you can stay on the line to leave a message at the front desk upstairs. To speak to a staff member at one of the circulation desks, choose 3), and then pick the adult or children's department.
